The earliest surviving English Valentine, written by Margery Brews to her fiancé John Paston in 1477, showcases the romantic exchanges between the couple amidst family pressures regarding their marriage. The letters highlight the challenges they faced, including dowry disputes, but ultimately led to their marriage in the autumn of that year. The letters are part of the Paston Letters collection at the British Library, where an exhibition titled 'Medieval Women: In Their Own Words' is currently on display.
