The Olympic Games originated as a religious event in ancient Greece, held in honor of Zeus, with the first recorded games in 776 B.C. Initially featuring only a sprinting race, the games evolved to include various athletic competitions, some of which were quite violent. Women were largely excluded from the events, with few exceptions, until the modern era. The games continued until they were banned by the Christian Emperor Theodosius in 395 A.D.
