The original Olympics began in 776 BC as part of a festival honoring Zeus and included various sports. After a ban in 393 AD, the modern Olympics resumed in 1896 with participation from 11 European countries and others. The Olympic rings were designed in 1913, and the first Winter Olympics took place in 1924. Olympic medals, once made of solid gold, are now only gold-plated.
