The FDA has approved a new blood test called Shield for screening colorectal cancer, aimed at increasing screening rates among adults aged 45 and up. While it is not a replacement for colonoscopies, Shield offers a less invasive method to identify potential cancer cases through DNA analysis from blood samples. The test has shown 83% sensitivity for detecting colorectal cancer but has limitations in identifying advanced precancerous polyps. Follow-up colonoscopies are necessary for confirmation of positive results.
