Hurricanes and tropical storms were initially identified by year and order until the U.S. adopted female names in 1953 to reduce confusion. Male names were added in 1979. The World Meteorological Organization now uses a predetermined list of names on a 6-year rotation, excluding q, u, x, y, and z. If more than 21 storms occur, names revert to the Greek alphabet. A name can be retired if it causes significant damage or fatalities, with 96 Atlantic storm names retired as of 2024, predominantly starting with the letter 'I'.
