Teddy Roosevelt survived shooting, assassination attempt in Milwaukee
A former Republican president, Teddy Roosevelt, survived an assassination attempt in Milwaukee in 1912 while campaigning for the White House as the Progressive Party candidate. The attempt was made by a disgruntled New Yorker named John Schrank, who believed Roosevelt should not serve a third term. Despite being shot in the chest, Roosevelt's life was saved by a metal spectacles case and a copy of his lengthy speech in his pocket. The shooter, Schrank, was ruled insane and spent the rest of his life in Wisconsin mental prisons.
