A G3 geomagnetic storm is expected to allow visibility of the Northern Lights across 17 U.S. states and northern Europe on Dec. 30 and early New Year’s Eve. This follows a spike in solar activity, including three strong solar flares and two coronal mass ejections. The aurora may be visible from states as far south as Illinois and Oregon, with the best viewing conditions occurring in areas with low light pollution.
