Seven cases of bubonic plague are reported on average every year in the US. A recent case was confirmed in Colorado, with the Southwestern US being the origin of most recent cases. Bubonic plague, also known as black death, is a rare bacterial disease spread by infected fleas. Symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, coughing up blood, and fever. Immediate hospitalization and antibiotic treatment are necessary for infected individuals.
