Here’s how a ‘derecho’ is defined by weather experts – NBC Chicago

Category: Weather

Derechos are powerful wind storms that can cause extensive damage in the Midwest, characterized by long-lived straight-line winds with wind gusts of at least 58 miles per hour along a swath extending more than 240 miles. They are most common between May and July, developing with a 'bow echo' and sustained by strong updrafts. Illinois averages one derecho each year.
