High Intake of Ultra-Processed Foods Associated with Increased Risk of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus | Lupus Foundation of America
Diet and nutrient consumption influence inflammation and disease progression in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A study found a connection between high intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and over 50% increased risk of SLE. UPFs are linked to obesity, inflammation, chronic diseases, and mortality. Sugar-sweetened beverages were strongly associated with SLE risk. Future studies should include diverse racial backgrounds. Co-authored by Karen Costenbader, MD, MPH.
