Algerians honor victims of colonial-era French crackdown at Paris Olympics ceremony

Category: Politics

Algerian athletes honored victims of the 1961 police crackdown on Algerian protesters in Paris during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics by tossing red roses into the river. This act commemorated the tragic event where around 120 protesters died and thousands were arrested. While some viewed it as a significant homage, others felt the Olympics was not the appropriate occasion for such a protest. French President Macron has acknowledged the inexcusable crimes of that day.
