5 Cases of Bird Flu Reported in Colorado Poultry Workers, Doubling This Year’s US Tally

Category: Health

Five people working at a poultry farm in northeastern Colorado have tested positive for bird flu, likely infected by chickens they were tasked with killing. The U.S. has reported a total of nine cases. The highly pathogenic bird flu strain has infected over 99 million chickens and turkeys in 2022, leading to federal compensation of over $1 billion to prevent further spread. The H5N1 virus has been affecting poultry farms globally for almost three decades, with around 900 human infections and a 50% fatality rate.
